Americans in Canada driven to divorce from their country
Globe and Mail (9 Nov 2011)

Twenty-two Americans attended “what is believed to be the first citizenship renunciation meeting ever held in Canada” at the US consulate in Toronto on October 20. A US official said: “We simply decided it was more efficient to have everybody come as a group and talk to everyone at once, rather than doing it individually. It was simply a time-management decision.” One person attending the meeting reported that officials explicitly avoided discussion of the “800-pound gorilla in the room” — the issue of newly aggressive US pursuit of its nonresident citizens. Mark Wittgen 51 from Indiana of Whitby ON, who emigrated in the early 1980s and acquired Canadian citizenship in 2003, described the experience as a ‘divorce’. “In Canada … there are {{have been?}} typically fewer than 100 renunciations a year.”
